2017 SHRM Student Case Competition

Volunteer Opportunities 

Friday

Career Summit Connector
7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. / 2 slots per event
Career Summit Connectors will assist with greeting Career Summit attendees and directing attendees to registration, sessions, the Career Connection Zone and the Case Competition rooms. They will provide support to the summit registration desk, assist with distributing summit materials, and work as a liaison between SHRM staff and summit attendees. In addition, they may fill in as needed for various volunteer roles. No HR generalist certification required. Students are not eligible.

Case Competition Oral Presentation Judge
8:15 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. / 25 slots per event (5 rooms / 5 judges per room)
Oral Presentation Judges will be assigned to be part of a panel of judges. An Oral Presentation Judge will be assigned to a presentation room, where the teams will come and deliver their 15-minute presentations. Prior to the onsite oral presentations, Oral Presentation Judges will watch a training webinar to help them get acquainted with the Case Competition rubric, rules and what they can expect once at the event. Judges will also attend a brief orientation session at the Career Summit, at which time they will meet their fellow panel judges, read the case and review what they should be listening for in the student presentations, as well as have a chance to ask any last minute questions. An Oral Presentation Judge will judge the students’ oral presentations based on the rubric that is provided. Oral Presentation Judges are not to provide tips or feedback of any kind to the students before, during or immediately after the presentation. However, once the final oral presentation round is complete and the winners have been announced, Oral Presentation Judges may provide tips and feedback to the students. Oral Presentation Judges must hold an HR generalist certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, SPHR/PHR/GPHR/PHR-CA/SPHR-CA). Professional Development Credit is available. Students are not eligible.
 
Connection Zone Coordinator
9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. / 2 slots per event

Coordinators will orient Career Connectors to their role and post bios for students to review. They will greet students in the Career Connection Zone and introduce students to the Career Connectors. They will ask students for their particular area of interest and match them with appropriate Career Connectors. One or more students may discuss HR careers with each of the Career Connectors. Coordinators manage the Career Connections Zone so that students have an engaging experience. No HR generalist certification required. Students are not eligible.
 
Case Competition Team Connector
9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. / 7 slots per event

Team Connectors will direct teams to the appropriate judging rooms and ensure that the teams’ presentations are available on the computer. They will stay in the judging room with a team during their presentation. They will be tasked with putting a sign on the door to indicate that a presentation is in progress and ensuring that no one enters or leaves the room during a presentation. They are responsible for keeping time and ensuring all teams are adhering to the rules of the Case Competition. Team Connectors will communicate directly with SHRM staff if there are any technical difficulties with the room technology. Case Competition Team Connectors are not to provide tips or feedback of any kind to the students before, during or after the presentation. HR certification is preferred but not required. Students are not eligible.
 
Career Connector (formerly Career Mentor)
9:30 a.m. – Noon and 12:15 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. / 40 slots per event (20 per session)

Career Connectors will meet one-on-one with students or in small groups. They will provide HR career advice and information to students. They may review and provide guidance on student resumes, conduct mock interviews, answer career development questions, and/or provide insight into the HR profession from a firsthand perspective. HR certification is preferred but not required. Students are not eligible.
 

Saturday

Case Competition Final Oral Presentation Judge
8:15 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. / 5 slots per event

Final Oral Presentation Judges will be assigned to be part of a panel of judges. Final Oral Presentation Judges will be assigned to the general session, where the final two teams from each division will come and deliver their 15-minute presentations. Prior to the onsite oral presentations, Oral Presentation Judges will watch a training webinar to help them get acquainted with the Case Competition rubric, rules and what they can expect once at the event. Judges will also attend a brief orientation session at the Career Summit, at which time they will meet their fellow panel judges, read the case and review what they should be listening for in the student presentations, as well as have a chance to ask any last minute questions. Final Oral Presentation Judges will judge the students’ oral presentations based on the rubric that is provided. Final Oral Presentation Judges are not to provide tips to the students before, during or immediately after the presentation. On-Site Volunteers (Friday and Saturday)
Disclaimer: Thank you for volunteering. SHRM offers you a complimentary registration to the Case Competition and Career Summit. As a note, transportation and lodging is at the expense of the volunteer and meals may or may not be included, depending on the volunteer assignment.
 

Virtual

Case Competition Virtual Written Presentation Judge
Virtual/54 slots total (18 slots per event)

Written Presentation Judges will judge the teams’ two-page written executive summaries virtually prior to the Case Competition, based on the rubric provided. Written Presentation Judges do not need to attend the event as all judging will be conducted in advance. Written Presentation Judges will complete an Instantaneous Feedback form for each written executive summary, which will be provided to the team after the competition is over. The written executive summaries will be sent prior to the event and must be judged and feedback forms submitted within the requested time frame. There will be a training webinar that will be required viewing for each judge prior to the written portion of the competition. This training webinar will help judges get acquainted with the Case Competition rubric, rules and what they can expect. Written Presentation Judges must hold an HR generalist certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, SPHR/PHR/GPHR/PHR-CA/SPHR-CA). Professional Development Credit is available. Students are not eligible.
 
Central Divisional Case Competition Written Presentation Judge – Judging Time Frame
This virtual volunteer role will begin on February 3, 2017, and judges will have until March 5, 2017, to provide their feedback.
 
West Divisional Case Competition Written Presentation Judge – Judging Time Frame
This virtual volunteer role will begin on February 24, 2017, and judges will have until March 26, 2017, to provide their feedback.
 
East Divisional Case Competition Written Presentation Judge – Judging Time Frame
This virtual volunteer role will begin on March 17, 2017, and judges will have until April 16, 2017, to provide their feedback.
