The “Great Resignation” is real, but likely not as simple as the two word slogan would suggest. Rather, it is a combination of job movement and other forces contributing to a change in the way people are looking at work. In many industries the pandemic has resulted in business closures and limited employment opportunities. The consequence is workers leaving in droves and looking for better paying and more stable opportunities. The pandemic has however, led to more retirements of baby boomers and many older Americans. For a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the higher risk of illness from COVID, many, rather than jeopardize their health, simply the left the workforce. Many women also left the workforce during the pandemic as result of lack of childcare or other alternatives. This is unfortunate and is likely to remain unless there is political will to address paid leave and other issues that adversely and more severely impact women in the workforce.
