1.25 SHRM PDCs, 1.25 HR Credit | Competencies: HR Expertise, Global & Cultural Effectiveness | Intended Audience: Mid-Level
Workplace Application:
This session will provide you with a thorough understanding of the legalization of same-sex marriage in the U.S. and how this impacts the workplace.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court ruled that the constitutional right to marry applies to same-sex couples. Therefore, no state can pass a law prohibiting same-sex marriage. But what does the decision mean for you?  This session will start with a brief summary of the majority and dissenting opinions—what they said and didn't say. This session will then focus on the impact this ruling has on following: benefits, leaves, employment policies, religious accommodations, immigration implications, discrimination issues, public policy and employer policies, social inclusion, microaggressions, employee relations, and more! This session will help you:

  • Analyze the Supreme Court’s decision and how it impacts the workplace.
  • Ensure that your organization’s policies, benefits and practices are compliant with the Supreme Court’s ruling and regulatory guidance.
  • Address the sincerely held religious beliefs of some employees that may be contrary to the idea of marriage equality.
