1.25 SHRM PDCs | Competencies: HR Expertise, Critical Evaluation, Business Acumen | Intended Audience: Mid-Level
Workplace Application:
You will examine the reasons you don't check references (including a very real fear of litigation) and step-by-step instructions for how to do so.

Reference checking has become such a taboo topic in the hiring game, and yet it's one of the most important determining factors when considering a candidate for a job. We think it's time to disrupt the notion that reference checks should be taboo. We jump all over candidate and employee referrals like they're the best thing since the Snuggie, shouldn't we then also hold a direct supervisor's referral or opinion of the employee's performance in high regard? At least in part while we consider all other factors? This session will teach you how to overcome the challenges, including the fear of litigation, of obtaining a reference and how to navigate this process with finesse every time you hire. You will learn:

·         Why employers don't try or are afraid to check references.

·         The various things we tell ourselves to justify not checking a reference.

·         How to overcome the many different candidate objections to getting reference
information, including “it's against HR policy.”

·         What kinds of things to actually say to the candidate's reference once you get the person
on the phone that will help you make an informed decision about the candidate's fit.
