1.50 SHRM PDCs | Competencies: HR Expertise, Business Acumen | Intended Audience: Mid-Level
Workplace Application:
Examine legislation impacting the workplace at local levels, and learn recommendations to increase grassroots advocacy initiatives.

Even though Republicans control the White House and both houses of Congress, gridlock largely remains in Washington D.C. So most of the legislative action for employers is at the local level. This session will cover, among other things, state laws and bills that pre-empt local ordinance as well as state and local laws that address paid sick leave, medical marijuana, right to work, minimum wage, unpaid leave and “ban the box.” You will:

  • Gain an increased awareness of state and local trends.
  • Understand the principles underlying the proposed laws and how you can apply them where practical.
  • Learn how to maximize effectiveness of grassroots advocacy.
