Workplace Application:
Learn how to dispel myths about mental health disorders, break the stigma surrounding depression and mental illness, and encourage employees to embrace treatment.

Depression in the workplace is a major corporate issue, causing staggering financial losses due to absenteeism, presenteeism, decreased productivity, increased errors, and short- and long-term disability. Employees with mental health disorders fear being labeled, judged, marginalized and negatively impacted at work. Carol A. Kivler brings a unique perspective to mental illness. As an international executive coach and corporate trainer with an M.S. in human resource education, as well as a consumer who has lived with clinical depression for over 20 years, she understands both sides of the equation. You will be equipped with strategies to create an atmosphere that respects and responds to a workforce affected by depression and that addresses the pervasive stigma surrounding mental illness. By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Identify the signs and symptoms of depression in the workplace.
  • Understand the difference human resource professionals can make in altering the impact of depression and incorporate strategies to address employee depression.
  • Establish the need for employee self-awareness and educational programs as part of a companywide strategy.
  • Identify partners that can provide workforce awareness and education.
  • Recognize the various types of stigma that surround mental health disorders.
