1.00 SHRM PDCs | Competencies: Relationship Management, Communication, Global & Cultural Effectiveness | Intended Audience: Senior-Level
Workplace Application:
Identify your cultural communication preferences and learn how to interact successfully with people who use other communication and conflict styles.

A study by the American Management Association found that 20 percent of our time and energy is spent dealing with conflict. As the workforce becomes more diverse, employees represent more cultures and therefore use varying cultural styles of communication as well as different styles to address conflict. Conflict is understandable and even expected, but if it’s unresolved, it affects recruitment, retention and customer relations. Based on Mitch Hammer’s proven framework, this session will explore the cultural differences in daily communication as well as the four basic cultural conflict styles. In addition, you will identify your own cultural communication preferences and learn how to interact with people who use other conflict styles. With a rigorously tested assessment tool, this surprisingly simple framework opens up a rich ground for frank discussion around many of the miscommunications that lead to conflict in the workplace. You will:

  • Understand you own cultural communication and conflict styles.
  • Identify other distinct cultural styles of communication.
  • Understand typical barriers to intercultural communication.
  • Learn techniques for resolving conflict across differences.
