1.00 SHRM PDCs | Competencies: Consultation, HR Expertise, Leadership & Navigation | Intended Audience: Senior-Level
Workplace Application:
Leaders will obtain increased knowledge to decide which strategic philosophy to adapt―performance leadership or management.

This session will tackle a major question in talent management today: whether or not to keep or ditch our performance management tools. More importantly, we will address how to change performance management so that the process improves performance and retains good employees. In this session, we will explore the importance of leading the proper performance from your employees instead of managing their performance. As industries move more toward relationship-based service and high emotional intelligence utilized in the workplace, it has never been more important to take a positive approach to leading employees. You will discuss the urgent need to create a positive, focused performance culture based on relationships and coaching that promotes retention and serves as a tool in this ever-increasing war on talent. As the debate regarding what to do with our performance management tools rages on, McGregor's management theories X and Y need to be revisited once again.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss with HR leaders the ramifications of ditching our performance management tools while explaining the differences between the fundamental philosophies of leading and managing performance.
  • Understand the various results tied to a relationship-based focus and an outcome-based performance focus and the appropriate balance between the two.
