Workplace Application:
This session will deconstruct the most common assumptions made by employers and veterans in order to correct the missed opportunities in the hiring process.

Studies report that nearly one-third of veteran job seekers are underemployed―a rate 15.6 percent higher than nonveteran job seekers―and nearly half of veterans leave their first civilian job within a year. We need to deconstruct the most common assumptions made by employers and veterans, so we can understand the missed opportunities in the hiring process and both can take accountability and correct their part in this gap. With this understanding, employers can get the best talent and veterans can build their new career.

Learning Objectives:

  • Go beyond the usual discussions on the outstanding character attributes of veterans to comprehend the main barriers that employers control and that blind veterans.
  • Comprehend the deeper meaning behind the statistics to understand challenges and their impact.
  • Prepare consultants, coaches and mentors to apply the insights to better help employers and veterans communicate more effectively and get the best mutual results.
  • Comprehend how the insights also apply to other marginalized populations (e.g., those with work history gaps, career changers or single parents).
