1.50 SHRM PDCs | Competencies: HR Expertise, Communication, Critical Evaluation | Intended Audience: Mid-Level
Workplace Application:
Review the most common reasons for discipline and discharge, the potential pitfalls with corrective actions, and strategies for reducing an employer’s risk of claims.

Disciplining and discharging employees has always been difficult. Now, the stakes are higher with potential legal claims that may be asserted if the process is mishandled. Reminiscent of the board game “Operation,” this session will walk you through various forms of discipline and best practices for success to help avoid the pain, embarrassment and claims that could arise from a misstep in the process. This session will:

  • Guide HR professionals through the greatest risks associated with the disciplinary and termination process.
  • Illustrate—through case studies—where employers have been sued for mishandling discipline.
  • Suggest alternative approaches to avoid or reduce the risk of claims.
