Case Competition Team & Individual Eligibility Requirements

Division Eligibility

  • Case Case Competition teams may choose to compete at any one of the three SHRM Student Case Competition and Career Summit events (Central, West or East), regardless of where the team’s college/university is located.
  • Competing teams are divided into two divisions, Division I and Division II, and are eligible to compete as follows:

Division I: Each team is made up of a minimum of two and a maximum of six undergraduate students, with each undergraduate team member being age 25 or younger as of Jan. 1, 2017.

Division II: Each team is made up of a minimum of two and a maximum of six students meeting one of the criteria below:

- The team is made up entirely of graduate students (regardless of age), OR
- The team is made up of undergraduate students and at least one team member is age 26 or older as of Jan. 1, 2017.
  • A minimum of three teams at each event (Central, West or East) must compete in each Division (I/II) for the division award to be given.
  • If the minimum is not met, two registered teams can still participate in the Case Competition and be judged, but no award will be given.
  • If fewer than three teams register for either of the divisions, SHRM will notify the teams that the award will not be given.

Team Eligibility

  • Each school may have only one Division I team and one Division II team compete per year.
  • A maximum of 30 teams can compete in each of the three Case Competition events.
  • Any team that registers after capacity has been reached will automatically be placed on a waitlist. If a slot opens up, the team captain will be notified. Waitlisted teams will be invited to compete in the order in which they registered.
  • Waitlisted teams will only be added to the competition lineup if a registered team drops out of the competition 21 days or more prior to the event date. This allows the waitlisted teams to fully participate in both the written and onsite portions of the competition. Waitlisted teams will NOT be allowed to compete in place of a registered team that is unable to attend the onsite event.
  • Switching teammates after the Case Competition registration deadline for each division closes is not permitted. There will be no exceptions. If a team member is unable to compete, the team will continue with one less team member.
  • Students from a college/university where no SHRM student chapter exists may form a team if all team members are SHRM student members.

Individual Eligibility

  • All competing team members must be current SHRM student members with active memberships at the time they register.
  • All competing team members must be active students at their college/university.
  • All team members must register as Career Summit attendees, in addition to registering as Case Competition participants, in order to be eligible to compete.

These individuals are NOT eligible to compete on a team:

  • Any student eligible to sit for the SHRM-CP*, SHRM-SCP*, PHR, SPHR, GPHR or similar HR generalist certification.
  • Students graduating in December are not eligible to compete in the following spring’s Case Competition.
  • Ph.D., Ed.D., Psy.D., DBA or other doctoral student students.
  • Chapter advisors and university faculty members.
